AI for small business marketing works best on the repeat jobs, which is good news when nobody on staff is a marketer. Take one real thing from your week, a finished job, a customer's question, a good review, and have AI turn it into a Google Business Profile post, a short email and a social post in your own voice. Then a person reads each one before it goes out under your name.

**TL;DR**

- Feed AI real material from your week; it can't supply your stories.
- Hand it the repeats: profile posts, review replies, one email.
- Keep offers, prices and promises with a person.
- AI-written fake reviews are banned under an FTC rule.

## What marketing can AI handle when you don't have a marketer?

The jobs that come around every week and look roughly the same each time. You're not alone in doing these yourself: in Constant Contact's 2026 Small Business Now survey of 3,340 small businesses, 47% of small business owners globally said they handle all social media management personally ([Constant Contact](https://news.constantcontact.com/2026-06-10-The-Rise-of-the-SMB-Creator-How-Small-Businesses-are-Leveraging-Social-Media-and-AI-to-Capture-Consumer-Attention)).

The repeat jobs AI drafts well:

- A Google Business Profile post about a recent job, offer or event.
- Replies to reviews, good and bad.
- One email a month to past customers.
- A short social post built from the same material as the profile post.
- A cleaned-up version of a customer's question, turned into a short answer for your website's FAQ.

What it can't do is know what happened at your business this week. That part is yours, and it's the part that makes the rest worth reading.

Leave the bigger calls with you too: what you sell, to whom, at what price, and which jobs you want more of. AI can list options, but it doesn't know which customers you'd rather not have, and that choice shapes every post you publish.

## What does a one-hour weekly marketing routine look like?

1. **Collect the raw material (10 minutes).** Two photos from a job, a sentence about what you did, any review that came in, and one question a customer asked.
2. **Ask for three drafts (5 minutes).** Paste it all into your AI assistant with your instructions and ask for a profile post, a social post and a reply to each new review.
3. **Edit (20 minutes).** Fix facts, cut anything you wouldn't say out loud, and check names and details.
4. **Post (10 minutes).** Google says profile posts share "announcements, offers, updates, and event details directly with your customers on Search and Maps" ([Google Business Profile Help](https://support.google.com/business/answer/7342169?hl=en)). Post the update, then the social version.
5. **Once a month, add the email (15 minutes).** Pull the month's posts into one short note to past customers. In a 2026 Constant Contact survey of more than 1,500 small business owners, 41% expected email marketing to be their most valuable marketing channel this year ([Constant Contact](https://constantcontact.com/blog/email-marketing-statistics)).

The times are a starting budget, not a measurement. Track your own for a month and adjust.

## How do you keep AI marketing sounding like you?

Give it your words before you ask for its words. Paste in five or six emails or texts you've written to customers and ask it to describe how you write: sentence length, words you use, words you never use. Save that description and paste it in with every request. Add a short "never say" list of the phrases that make you wince.

Some pieces shouldn't be drafted at all. Rick Kranz, co-founder of AI Marketing Labs, works through his own LinkedIn posts with AI as a thinking partner for exactly this reason: "The one that I think suffers for me is LinkedIn posts because I don't want them to be just spit out by AI." Let AI draft the repeat jobs. For the pieces that carry your opinion, use it to think, then write them yourself.

## What should a person always check before it goes out?

Prices, offers, dates, promises, customer names and anything about a complaint. AI writes confidently whether it's right or not. Google's own guidance on AI-generated content says "it is critical to manually factcheck and review all AI-generated content for accuracy and trustworthiness before publishing," and that using AI to produce many pages "without adding value for users" may break its spam policies ([Google Search Central](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/fundamentals/using-gen-ai-content)).

A good rule: if a sentence would cost you money or a customer if it were wrong, a person checks it.

## When is it worth automating the routine?

Once the weekly hour works and you're sure what good looks like. At that point the collecting and drafting can run on their own: a finished job in your system triggers a draft post and a review request, and you approve both from your phone. AI Marketing Labs builds that kind of system as a [Custom AI Automation](https://ai-marketinglabs.com/ai-automation-services), on your own tools and owned by you, scoped once we understand your process. Until the manual routine is steady, automating it just makes the wrong thing faster. ## Can AI help with reviews without getting you in trouble?

For replies, yes. For the reviews themselves, no. The FTC's rule on consumer reviews, finalized in August 2024, bans fake reviews, including "AI-generated fake reviews," and the agency can seek civil penalties against knowing violators ([FTC](https://www.ftc.gov/news-events/news/press-releases/2024/08/federal-trade-commission-announces-final-rule-banning-fake-reviews-testimonials)). In December 2025 the FTC warned 10 companies about possible violations and noted penalties of up to $53,088 per violation ([FTC](https://www.ftc.gov/news-events/news/press-releases/2025/12/ftc-warns-10-companies-about-possible-violations-agencys-new-consumer-review-rule)).

[Google's own tips](https://support.google.com/business/answer/3474122?hl=en) line up with what AI does well when you set the rules: keep it short and simple, respond in a timely manner, and never share a reviewer's private information. Have AI draft the reply, then read it as the customer would.

Watch the incentive rules too. The FTC allows incentives for reviews as long as you don't require a particular sentiment ([FTC Q&A](https://www.ftc.gov/business-guidance/resources/consumer-reviews-testimonials-rule-questions-answers)), but Google's rules for business profiles don't allow incentives at all ([Google](https://support.google.com/business/answer/3474122?hl=en)). The FTC also notes that failing to disclose incentives could violate the FTC Act. Simplest path: ask every happy customer for a review, and offer nothing for it.

## Frequently asked questions

Which marketing channel should a small business without a marketer start with?

Start where your customers already find you. For a local business, the Google Business Profile is the obvious first stop because it shows on Search and Maps. Then email past customers, and add social once those two run every week.

Should you tell customers that AI helped write your posts?

What matters most is that every post is accurate and that you stand behind it. If a post includes a customer's words or story, ask them first, whoever drafted it.

Can AI make images for your marketing too?

It can. Use AI images for simple graphics like an event announcement, and real photos for anything that shows your work, since a customer is judging the job you actually did.
