Learning how to rank in AI Overviews starts with dropping an old assumption: you don't need a page-one ranking. In Ahrefs' 2026 study of 863,000 search results, [37.9% of the URLs cited in AI Overviews also appeared in the first 10 results](https://ahrefs.com/blog/ai-overview-citations-top-10/), and the rest split almost evenly between positions 11 to 100 and pages outside the top 100. The advice you'll still read everywhere, that about three in four citations come from page one, comes from an earlier version of that research.

**TL;DR**

- Google's stated bar is simple: indexed, and eligible to show a snippet.
- Long question searches trigger AI Overviews far more often than short ones.
- Answer the follow-up questions Google runs behind the main search.

## Why does everyone say you need page one first?

Because it used to look that way. Ahrefs' July 2025 study found [76.10% of AI Overview-cited pages ranked in the top 10](https://ahrefs.com/blog/search-rankings-ai-citations). That figure got repeated so often that Google's own AI Overview still serves a version of it when you search this topic. Ahrefs' newer study measured things differently, so the two numbers aren't a straight before-and-after. But the newer data is clear on the part that matters to you: most cited pages in it were not top-10 pages.

Ranking well still helps. 37.9% is the biggest single slice. It's just not the gate anymore, and that changes where a small site should spend its time.

## What does Google actually require?

Less than the checklists suggest. Google's page on [AI features and your website](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features) says a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet. It adds that there are no additional technical requirements, and no special schema.org structured data you need to add.

That gives you a short list to check before anything else:

- The page is indexed. Check it in Search Console's URL Inspection.
- Nothing blocks snippets. A nosnippet rule or a very short max-snippet setting keeps a page out.
- The page is reachable without a login, and the answer is in the page text rather than locked in an image or PDF.

Everything past that is about being the best answer to a specific question, not about technical tricks.

## Which searches should a smaller site go after?

Long, specific questions. Ahrefs found AI Overviews [appear in 57.9% of question queries and on 46.4% of queries with seven or more words](https://ahrefs.com/blog/how-to-rank-in-ai-overviews/). Short head terms are where big sites crowd the results. Long questions are where an AI Overview shows up most and where a specific answer from a small business can be the best one available.

Pull your candidates from your own inbox and phone notes. "How long does a tankless water heater install take in an older house" is the kind of question that gets an AI Overview and that a local plumber can answer better than a national content farm. Write down twenty questions customers asked you in the last six months. That list is your target list.

## What are the follow-up questions Google runs behind a search?

Google describes AI Mode and AI Overviews as using a "query fan-out" technique: issuing multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources to build the answer. Our plain reading of that: the main question is one search, but the answer gets assembled from several smaller ones. A page that answers the main question and the obvious follow-ups gives Google more chances to pick it.

For the water heater example, the follow-ups are easy to guess: does the gas line need upgrading, does the venting change, what does a permit involve, how long is hot water off. Give each one its own heading with a direct two- or three-sentence answer underneath. Our post on [structuring content for AI Overviews](https://ai-marketinglabs.com/lab-experiments/whats-the-best-way-to-structure-content-for-ai-search-overviews) covers the layout side.

## How do you rework a page you already have?

Pick a page that ranks somewhere in positions 11 to 50 for a question search. It's already indexed and Google already thinks it's relevant, so it's the cheapest win available.

1. Put the direct answer in the first two sentences, worded close to how a customer asks it.
2. Add a section for each follow-up question, each with its own short answer.
3. Replace general claims with your specifics: price ranges you can stand behind, timeframes, the towns you serve.
4. Cut sections that don't answer anything a buyer asked.

If you'd like a head start on step one, AI Marketing Labs' free [AI Search Optimizer](https://aioptimize.ai-marketinglabs.com/) rewrites existing content to perform better in AI-powered search. Treat its output as a draft and check every fact before you publish.

## What should you skip?

Three things eat small-business budgets here without much to show for it. Paid add-ons that promise special AI Overview markup, since Google says none is needed. Chasing two-word head terms where national sites own page one. And publishing a stack of short pages that each say the same thing about a different service, which gives neither a reader nor Google a better answer than you had before. Put that time into making five pages the clearest answer in your area instead.

## How do you tell whether it worked?

Search your target questions in a private window every week or two and note whether your page is cited. New pages need time first: Google says [crawling can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/crawling-indexing/ask-google-to-recrawl), and a recrawl request doesn't guarantee inclusion. Give a reworked page a month before you judge it, then move to the next one on your list.

## Frequently asked questions

Do I need FAQ schema to show up in AI Overviews?

Google says no special schema.org markup is needed for its AI features. If you add FAQ markup, keep it identical to questions and answers readers can see on the page.

Can a brand-new page get into an AI Overview?

Yes, once it's indexed and eligible for a snippet. Google says crawling can take a few days to a few weeks, so a new page won't be cited until that happens.

Are AI Overviews and AI Mode the same thing?

No. They're separate Google features, but Google covers both in the same guidance, and the same basic bar applies: an indexed page that can show a snippet.
