A free AI search visibility tool is good enough to tell you whether AI engines mention your business and who they name instead. It isn't good enough to tell you whether the changes you make are working. AI answers shift so much from one run to the next that a single snapshot can't show a trend, and showing a trend is what paid tracking is for.

**TL;DR**

- A free check answers one question well: are we in AI answers at all?
- The same AI recommendation list repeated less than 1 time in 100 in one study.
- Pay once you're changing pages and need to see the effect.

## What can a free AI search visibility tool show you?

A snapshot, and a useful one. [HubSpot's AI Search Grader](https://www.hubspot.com/ai-search-grader) is free to run and checks GPT-5.4 mini, Perplexity, and Gemini. [Ahrefs' free checker](https://ahrefs.com/ai-visibility-checker) needs no signup and covers ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Overviews, and Google AI Mode, with a limited preview of the top five results in each section.

AI Marketing Labs' free [AIScope report](https://ai-marketinglabs.com/aiscope) is built for the follow-up question: who AI recommends instead of you, with a cited source for every finding. That source list matters more than any score, because it tells you which pages put a competitor in front of you.

## Why can't one check tell you much?

Because AI answers aren't stable. SparkToro and Gumshoe had about 600 volunteers run the same 12 prompts a combined 2,961 times and found [a less than 1 in 100 chance](https://sparktoro.com/blog/new-research-ais-are-highly-inconsistent-when-recommending-brands-or-products-marketers-should-take-care-when-tracking-ai-visibility/) that ChatGPT or Google's AI would give the same list twice. Their advice for anyone who needs a precise read: ask the same question many times, usually at least 60 to 100, and average the results.

Presence holds up better than position. Search Engine Land's write-up of the study notes that in some categories the same names showed up in [60% to 90% of responses](https://searchengineland.com/ai-recommendation-lists-rarely-repeat-study-468076) for a given intent. So a free check can tell you if you're in the mix. It can't tell you whether you moved from third to first, and nothing that runs a question once can.

## When is free good enough?

- You've never checked, and you want to know whether AI knows your business at all.
- You run one location with a handful of services.
- You haven't started changing pages or listings yet, so there's nothing to measure.
- You want a list of the sources AI cites for your competitors, so you know where to start.

## When should you pay for tracking?

- You've started making changes and need to see whether they worked.
- You're tracking several services or towns, and checking by hand eats an afternoon.
- You need a history to show a partner, a client, or yourself in six months.

When you get there, compare plans by how many questions they track and how often they re-run them. We've laid out [the AI visibility tools that fit a small business budget](https://ai-marketinglabs.com/lab-experiments/the-best-ai-visibility-tools-for-a-small-business-budget) with current prices.

## Is there a route between free and paid?

There is, if you or someone on your team is comfortable building. A business can track its AI visibility without a paid platform: an agent-built tool can read your sitemap, find which buyer questions your pages already appear for, pick the ones worth targeting, run them against the major AI assistants on a schedule, and record who gets cited. One run per question a day gives you a rough picture, not a precise one.

## What does a free check miss?

Three things. History, because a snapshot has nothing to compare against. Location, because local answers depend on where the question is asked: BrightLocal found [ChatGPT's reach for local questions went up to 287 km](https://www.brightlocal.com/research/local-ai-visibility-study/), against 38 km for Google's AI Overviews, so a check run for one town says little about the next. And depth, because free tiers cap how many questions or results you see. None of that makes a free check useless. It means you read it as a first look, then decide whether the gaps it shows are worth paying to watch.

## Which free check should you run first?

Run the one that covers the AI tools your customers use. For a local service business, start with Google's AI features and ChatGPT, which Ahrefs' free checker covers in one pass. Then ask your top two or three questions directly in ChatGPT and in Google yourself, because seeing the actual answers tells you more than any score. If competitors keep showing up, that's when a source-by-source report earns its place.

## How do you run a fair free check?

1. Write down eight to ten questions real customers asked before they hired you.
2. Run each one in a free tool, and ask a couple of them directly in ChatGPT in a fresh chat.
3. Repeat on three different days in the same week.
4. Record who's named and which sources are cited each time.
5. Count how often you appear across all runs, not whether you appeared once.

Keep that sheet. When you run the same questions next month, you'll have a baseline, and that's the first time a free tool starts to show a trend.

## Frequently asked questions

How many times should I run each question?

For a precise read, SparkToro suggests 60 to 100 runs averaged together. For a small business baseline, a few runs on different days shows if you show up at all.

Do free tools show my competitors?

Some do. Ahrefs' free checker shows the top cited domains, and AIScope shows who AI recommends instead of you, with sources.

Do free tools use live AI answers or stored data?

It varies by tool, and not every tool says. If a tool doesn't state when its answers were collected, treat the result as a rough baseline.
