![What AI for Consultants Should Handle First](https://ai-marketinglabs.com/hubfs/What%20AI%20for%20Consultants%20Should%20Handle%20First.jpg)

AI for consultants should handle the work around the engagement first: prep before calls, research, meeting notes, status updates, and first drafts of deliverables. Keep the thinking the client pays for, meaning the diagnosis, the recommendation, and the judgment call. Start with the task you repeat for every client every week, because that's where the hours are and where a mistake is easy to catch.

**TL;DR**

- Automate the work around client work, not the advice itself.
- Start with the weekly status update or call prep you do for every client.
- Keep client data in tools you control, and read everything before it's sent.

## What should a consultant hand to AI first?

The jobs that repeat across clients and follow the same shape each time:

- **Call prep.** A one-page brief before each client call: what was agreed last time, what's open, what changed in their business, what to ask.
- **Meeting notes and actions.** A clean summary, decisions, and who owes what, sent while the call is still fresh.
- **Weekly client updates.** Pulling the numbers or progress for each client into a short written report in your voice.
- **Research summaries.** Reading a client's industry news, competitor sites, or a long report and pulling out what matters for your engagement.
- **First drafts.** Proposals, scopes of work, and the boring sections of deliverables (background, method, appendix) that you then rewrite.

If you only pick one, pick the weekly client update. It's the same job for every client, it's due on a schedule, and the client sees whether it's late. Automate it once and it pays off across your whole roster. The same logic drives [AI for solopreneurs who don't want to hire](https://ai-marketinglabs.com/lab-experiments/ai-for-solopreneurs-who-dont-want-to-hire): capacity without a hire.

## What should stay with you?

The parts you'd put your name on in front of a board. The diagnosis of what's actually wrong. The recommendation and the tradeoffs behind it. Anything said in confidence. Pricing and scope. The moment a client needs to hear something they won't like.

AI can draft all of those. It shouldn't decide any of them. A useful check before anything goes out: if the client asked "why do you think that?", could you answer without looking at what the AI wrote? If not, it isn't your advice yet.

## How much time can AI save a consultant?

The best data comes from adjacent professions, so treat it as a direction, not a promise. Thomson Reuters surveyed 2,275 professionals across legal, risk, compliance, tax, accounting, audit and trade, who expected that [professionals using AI will save 5 hours weekly within the next year](https://www.thomsonreuters.com/en/press-releases/2025/june/the-ai-adoption-reality-check-firms-with-ai-strategies-are-twice-as-likely-to-see-ai-driven-revenue-growth-those-without-risk-falling-behind). That's a forecast from people in regulated fields, not a measured result for independent consultants.

Independent workers are already using it. MBO Partners reported that in 2025, [74% of independent professionals reported using gen AI](https://www.mbopartners.com/blog/independent-workforce-trends/why-independent-contractors-are-leading-ai-adoption). The question for you is whether those hours go to more client work, better work, or a shorter week. Decide that before you start, or the saved time disappears into email.

## How do you protect client data when you use AI?

Treat client information the way your engagement letter says you will, then check that your AI setup actually does that. A few habits:

- **Use a business plan, not a free personal account,** and read its data settings so you know whether your inputs are used for training.
- **Keep client files in folders you control** and give the AI access to only the client you're working on.
- **Strip what you don't need.** A research summary rarely needs the client's name or financials.
- **Ask before using AI on sensitive work** if your contract or the client's policy is unclear. Some clients will say no, and that's their call.

## How do you set up the first job?

1. **Write the template.** What a good weekly update looks like for you: sections, length, tone, what you always include.
2. **Gather two or three updates you were proud of** as examples.
3. **Connect the source.** The numbers, the project board, the meeting notes, whatever the update is built from.
4. **Run it for one client for three weeks** and edit each draft before it goes.
5. **Fold your edits into the template,** then roll it out to the next client.

Keep the template and examples in a document you own. Clients change, tools change, and the instructions are the part worth keeping.

## What goes wrong when consultants automate?

- **Sending drafts unread.** A client update with a wrong number in it costs more trust than a late one.
- **Mixing clients.** An assistant with access to every client folder can pull the wrong client's details into a document. Keep work separated by client.
- **Sounding like everyone else.** Clients hire you for your view. If every update reads like a template, they'll notice. Give the AI your own past writing as examples.
- **Automating the wrong job.** If the job only happens twice a year, write a good template and stop there.

## When is it worth getting help to build it?

When the job needs to run on its own: pulling data from several clients' systems, starting on a schedule, filing the output where clients can see it. That's past what a chat window does well.

AI Marketing Labs' The Lab names consultants as one of the groups it's a great fit for. It's a working room rather than a course, with three live build sessions a week and weekly office hours, where you build your own systems with help instead of handing them to someone else. For a consultant who'll be explaining AI to clients sooner or later, building it yourself is also the fastest way to talk about it with a straight face.

## What does a good week look like once it's running?

Monday morning, each client's update draft is waiting, built from last week's numbers and notes. You spend ten minutes per client correcting and adding the one insight only you'd see, then send. Before each call, a brief is in your inbox. After each call, the notes are filed and the actions are in your task list.

None of that is the work clients hire you for. All of it is work that used to eat the hours you'd rather spend on the part they do.

## Frequently asked questions

Should consultants tell clients they use AI?

If AI touches client information or deliverables, say so, and say how you check its work. A client is likely to be more comfortable hearing it from you than discovering it.

Can AI write a consulting deliverable?

It can draft sections of one. The diagnosis and recommendation should be yours, and every claim should be something you can defend without pointing at the AI.

What AI tools do consultants need?

Usually a general AI assistant on a business plan, a meeting note-taker, and one place where client files live. Add more only when a specific job needs it.

Can AI help consultants win more clients?

It can draft proposals, research prospects, and turn past engagements into case studies with the client's permission. Winning the work still comes down to your judgment and your track record.
