# [What AI Search Optimization Services Cost, and What Changes the Price](https://ai-marketinglabs.com/lab-experiments/what-ai-search-optimization-services-cost-and-what-changes-the-price)

AI search optimization services are usually priced as a monthly retainer, and three things move the number most: how many pages get rewritten or written each month, how many AI engines get tracked, and whether ongoing content is part of the fee. Two quotes with the same package name can cover very different amounts of work. Ask each provider for the deliverables per month in writing and compare those, not the price tag.

**TL;DR**

- AI search work is usually sold as a monthly retainer.
- Pages per month, engines tracked and content included drive the price.
- Compare quotes on deliverables, not package names.

## What do AI search optimization services cost right now?

There's no neutral price index yet, so the best data comes from industry reports, and both of the larger ones were published by companies that sell in this market. First Page Sage, an agency, compiled 1,146 quotes from 214 agencies in mid-2026 and reported that ["the median GEO and AEO retainer is $6,850 per month, up 66% since the first quarter of 2024."](https://firstpagesage.com/seo-blog/geo-aeo-pricing-statistics/) Smaller businesses in their data paid well below that median.

Spending looks lower from the buyer's side. Presenc AI, a tool vendor, surveyed 412 marketing leaders in early 2026 and found ["the average monthly GEO budget across all company sizes is $4,200,"](https://presenc.ai/research/geo-budget-benchmarks-2026) with smaller companies spending far less and putting much of it into tools and their own time rather than agencies.

Read both as rough guides. They tell you a $500 "AI SEO" add-on and a $10,000 retainer aren't the same product, which is the useful part.

## What changes the price of AI search optimization services?

| Price driver | Why it costs more | What to ask |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Pages rewritten or written per month | It's the actual work, and the slowest part | How many pages, and who writes them? |
| AI engines tracked | Each engine cites different sources, so each needs its own checking | Which engines, and how many prompts on each? |
| Ongoing content included | New pages each month cost more than fixing old ones | Is new content in the fee or billed separately? |
| Outside mentions and outreach | Getting cited on other sites takes outreach time | Is any off-site work included, and what kind? |
| Reporting depth | Custom reports take analyst time | What's in the monthly report, and can we see raw answers? |

The cheapest tiers are often mostly reporting. First Page Sage notes that ["starter engagements usually cover reporting, a technical audit, and a few pages each month."](https://firstpagesage.com/seo-blog/geo-aeo-pricing-statistics/) Reporting is useful, but pages are what get cited.

## Why does the number of AI engines matter so much?

Because the engines barely agree on what to cite. Writesonic, a tool vendor, studied 161,286 prompts across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews and found that ["72 to 73% of every cited domain, appears on exactly one engine and nowhere else."](https://writesonic.com/blog/ai-citation-source-overlap-study) Ahrefs found something similar from another angle: only about 12% of links cited by ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot [appear in Google's top 10 results](https://ahrefs.com/blog/ai-search-overlap/) for the same prompt.

So "we track AI search" can mean one engine or five, and the work behind each is different. If your buyers mostly use one or two, don't pay to track five.

## Retainer or fixed project: which costs less over a year?

It depends on who does the work after month three. A retainer keeps an agency producing and tracking every month, and the cost never stops. A fixed project builds the process once and hands it over, and your ongoing cost is your own time plus tools.

Do the math over 12 months. A $3,000 monthly retainer is $36,000 a year. A one-time build plus a tracker subscription can come in well under that, but only if someone on your side will actually run it. If nobody will, the retainer is the honest choice. Either way, put the 12-month total next to each option before you decide, not the monthly number.

AI Marketing Labs sells the fixed version. The AIO System is a content engine built on your knowledge base, priced from $8,000 as a fixed-price, three-week engagement with no retainer, and your team runs it after handoff. It fits businesses with real expertise to draw on and someone to run it; it doesn't fit if you want a vendor doing the work indefinitely.

## How do you compare two quotes side by side?

Put them in the same columns. Say one agency offers a "Growth" package and another an "AI Visibility" plan at a similar monthly price. On paper they look alike. Written out, the first might rewrite four pages a month and track one engine, while the second rewrites none, tracks four engines and sends a long report. The first is doing the work that gets you cited; the second is measuring that you aren't.

Watch for these in any quote:

- "Optimization" with no page count.
- A guaranteed placement in ChatGPT or Google's AI answers. Nobody controls those.
- Tracking you can't see the raw answers for.
- A long minimum term before you've seen a baseline.

Then ask each provider to show you one page they rewrote for a past client, before and after, and what happened to that page's citations. A provider doing real page work will have that example ready. One selling reports usually won't, and that tells you which of the two quotes is buying actual work.

## What should a quote include?

1. The number of pages written or rewritten each month.
2. Which AI engines are tracked, how many prompts, and how often each is run.
3. Whether new content, outreach and technical fixes are in the fee.
4. What you own if you cancel: content, prompt lists and history.
5. How results will be measured, with a baseline taken before work starts.

## Frequently asked questions

Is AI search optimization more expensive than SEO?

It can be, because it adds tracking across several AI engines and usually more content work. Many providers bundle it with SEO, so ask what's new work and what's the same SEO with a new label.

Can a small business do AI search optimization without an agency?

Often, yes. Free reports in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools, one low-cost tracker, and someone who can write clear answer pages each month cover the basics.

How long should I commit to an AI search retainer?

Long enough to see a trend, often a few months, with a clear way out. Ask for monthly terms after an initial period and make sure the content and data are yours if you leave.
