![Why Your AI Visibility Tracker Shows Different Results Every Week](https://ai-marketinglabs.com/hubfs/why-your-ai-visibility-tracker-shows-different-results-every-week-2.jpg)

Your AI visibility tracker shows different results every week because AI assistants often give a different answer to the same question each time, and the sources they cite rotate on top of that. A single check is a snapshot of one roll of the dice. Read the trend across many runs of the same prompts, over several weeks, and only act on a change that holds.

**TL;DR**

- AI answers vary by design, so one run tells you very little.
- Many runs per prompt give a usable number; one run doesn't.
- Act on a change only when it holds for several weeks.

## Why does the same question get a different answer each time?

Because the models are built that way. OpenAI's own documentation says its chat APIs [are non-deterministic by default](https://developers.openai.com/cookbook/examples/reproducible_outputs_with_the_seed_parameter), which means model outputs may differ from request to request. The assistant also searches the web live for many questions, and the pages it finds can change between one run and the next.

A tracker that asks each question once a week is sampling that randomness, not measuring your position. How trackers work in general is covered in [how an AI visibility tracker watches your brand](https://ai-marketinglabs.com/lab-experiments/how-an-ai-visibility-tracker-watches-your-brand-in-ai-search). This post is about reading what one tells you.

## How much do AI answers actually change?

It depends on what you measure, and the studies make that clear.

- **Cited sources rotate fast.** SISTRIX tracked 82,619 prompts for 17 weeks and found that [Google replaces 56% of sources in AI-generated responses every week, whilst ChatGPT replaces as much as 74%](https://www.sistrix.com/blog/ai-citation-drift/).
- **But a core holds steady.** The same study found a stable core of a few domains for 86% of prompts, with the rest rotating. For 43% of brand queries, the brand's own domain appeared in all 17 weeks.
- **Month to month, more shifts.** Profound found that [roughly 40-60% of the domains cited in AI responses will be completely different just one month later](https://www.tryprofound.com/blog/ai-search-volatility).
- **At the domain level, less does.** BrightEdge looked at one week and found [96.8% of cited domains saw zero change week over week](https://www.brightedge.com/resources/weekly-ai-search-insights/ai-search-citations-week-to-week-changes).

Put together: a few sources stay, many more come and go, and a tracker that reports a single list each week will look jumpy even when nothing about your business changed.

## How many runs does a fair reading need?

Likely more than your tracker runs by default. A 2026 study from the University of St. Gallen measured this directly and found that [a single run is essentially uninformative](https://arxiv.org/pdf/2604.07585). The authors recommend at least 7 runs per prompt per day for brand visibility monitoring, and at least 8 when you care about which sources get cited.

Ask your tool vendor how many times each prompt runs, how often, and on which assistants. If the answer is once a week, treat each week's number as a rough sample and lean on the monthly average. A free tool is fine for a first look, as covered in [whether a free AI search visibility tool is good enough](https://ai-marketinglabs.com/lab-experiments/is-a-free-ai-search-visibility-tool-good-enough), but it won't settle a week-to-week question.

## Which number on your tracker should you trust?

The share of runs where you're mentioned, averaged over a month, across the same set of prompts. That number moves slowly and means something. Position in a list and which link got cited on a given day move fast and mean much less.

Keep the prompt set fixed. Adding or swapping questions every week makes the line move for reasons that have nothing to do with you. If you need new prompts, add them as a separate group and compare like with like.

## How do you read a trend instead of a snapshot?

- Use a four-week rolling average for mention share, not the latest week.
- Compare the same assistant month to month. ChatGPT and Google don't move together.
- Write down what you changed and when: a new service page, a listing fix, a press mention. Changes in the line only mean something next to that log.
- Look for the stable core. If your own site keeps showing up in the cited sources for your brand questions, that's the floor you build on.

## What should you ask your tracker vendor?

- How many times does each prompt run, and how often?
- Which assistants does it check, and does it report them separately?
- Does it show a mention rate across runs, or only the latest answer?
- Can you see the cited sources for each run, not just a score?
- Can you export the raw runs, so you can average them yourself?

A tool that answers the first and third questions well is worth more than one with a nicer dashboard.

## When is a drop real?

When it holds. A drop that lasts three or four weeks, shows up on more than one assistant, and lines up with something that changed (a competitor's new page, a listing that broke, a page you removed) is worth chasing. A one-week dip that recovers on its own was the dice.

When the trend does need to move up, it moves on the same things that put you in the answers in the first place: clear pages on the questions buyers ask, kept current. That's what AI Marketing Labs builds the AIO System for. For how long those changes take to show, see [how long AI visibility takes to build](https://ai-marketinglabs.com/lab-experiments/how-long-ai-visibility-takes-to-build-and-what-speeds-it-up), and for the bigger picture, [the complete guide to AI search optimization](https://ai-marketinglabs.com/lab-experiments/the-complete-guide-to-ai-search-optimization-aso).

## Frequently asked questions

Is my AI visibility tracker broken if the numbers jump around?

Not necessarily. AI answers vary from run to run, so a tracker that checks each question once will show swings. Check how many times it runs each prompt before deciding the tool is wrong.

How often should I check AI visibility results?

Look at the weekly numbers if you like, but make decisions on the monthly average. Reviewing once a month, against a log of what you changed, gives you something you can act on.

Should I track more prompts or run the same prompts more often?

Run a fixed set more often first. A smaller set measured well tells you more than a large set measured once, and you can add prompts later as a separate group.
