How to Get Cited by ChatGPT When You're a Small Brand
If you're working out how to get cited by ChatGPT as a small brand, sort out access first, then borrow reach from other sites. Make sure OpenAI's search crawler can read your site and that Bing has your pages indexed. Write pages that each answer one buyer question. Then get your business named on the lists and review sites ChatGPT already cites, because on a small site your own pages rarely carry you alone.
TL;DR
- Block OpenAI's search crawler and ChatGPT search won't show your pages, whatever else you fix.
- Small sites do get cited, just far less often than big ones.
- Best-of lists and review profiles are the quickest outside route in.
Is ChatGPT citing pages it found or things it remembers?
Both happen, but only one gives you a citation. ChatGPT answers some questions from what it learned in training, and those answers come without links. When it searches the web, it shows sources next to the answer, and that's the part a small brand can work on this month. OpenAI's help page on ChatGPT search says it may pass search queries to third-party search providers such as Bing, alongside its own crawling.
So when you ask how to get cited by ChatGPT, you're really asking two things: can its search find your page, and once it finds a dozen pages on the same question, why would it pick yours?
What has to be true before ChatGPT can cite you at all?
Start with the door, because nothing else matters if it's shut. OpenAI's crawler documentation says OAI-SearchBot is the crawler used to surface websites in ChatGPT's search features, and that sites opted out of it will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers. GPTBot is a separate crawler used for model training.
Three checks for this week:
- Open your robots.txt file and confirm OAI-SearchBot isn't disallowed. If you change it, OpenAI says it can take about 24 hours for its systems to adjust.
- Set up Bing Webmaster Tools and confirm your main service pages are indexed there, since Bing is one of the providers OpenAI names.
- Search Bing for your business name plus your main service. If your own site doesn't come up, fix that before you spend time on anything else here.
If you'd rather keep your content out of model training, you can block GPTBot and still allow OAI-SearchBot. They're separate switches.
How much does being a small site hold you back?
Less than you'd fear, more than you'd like. SE Ranking looked at 129,000 domains, and its results, reported by Search Engine Journal, show sites with up to 2,500 referring domains averaged 1.6 to 1.8 ChatGPT citations, while sites with more than 350,000 averaged 8.4. That's a correlation, not proof that links cause citations, but the shape is clear: small sites get cited, just much less often.
The useful takeaway is about where to spend effort. You won't out-link a national brand this year. You can get your business named on pages that already earn citations, and you can make your own pages the clearest answer for the narrow questions your buyers ask.
Which outside pages give a small brand the best shot?
Look at what ChatGPT already cites. In Ahrefs' study of 750 top-of-funnel prompts, "best X" blog lists made up 43.8% of all cited page types, and 35% of the cited lists were on low-authority domains. A small trade blog's "best roofers in Columbus" post can carry your name into an answer that your own site couldn't reach.
Review platforms are the other lever. In the same SE Ranking data, domains listed on multiple review platforms averaged 4.6 to 6.3 citations, against 1.8 for domains that weren't listed. And forums count: Ahrefs' running tally of the most cited domains in ChatGPT puts Reddit first, with 16.8% of citations.
What that means in practice:
- Ask ChatGPT the three questions your best customers asked before they hired you. Note every list, directory, and article it cites.
- Contact the authors of the lists that fit and ask to be considered, with one specific reason you belong there.
- Fill out your review profiles completely and keep asking happy customers to leave reviews.
- Answer questions in the forums your buyers use, as yourself, and only where you have something useful to add.
What should your own pages say so ChatGPT can quote them?
Give it something specific to lift. A page that says "we offer quality service at fair prices" gives an AI nothing to quote. A page that says which jobs you do, in which towns, how pricing works, and how long the job usually takes gives it a clean answer to repeat. One page per buyer question works better than one page that tries to answer everything. Our post on making content show up in AI search covers the page structure in more detail.
Keep those pages current. SE Ranking found pages updated within the last three months averaged 6 citations, against 3.6 for older ones. Changing a date on its own does nothing for the reader, so update the facts that actually changed: prices, service areas, the questions customers ask now.
How do you know if it's working?
Ask ChatGPT the same buyer questions every couple of weeks and write down who it names and which sources it shows. The answers will vary from one run to the next, so look for a pattern over several checks, not a single win. For a quicker baseline, AI Marketing Labs' free AIScope report shows who AI recommends instead of you, with a cited source for every finding, which tells you exactly which outside pages to go after first.
Your analytics can confirm the result. Traffic that arrives from ChatGPT search usually carries a chatgpt.com referral, so set up a simple report for it before you start changing things, and you'll be able to see whether the work paid off.
Frequently asked questions
Does blocking GPTBot stop ChatGPT from citing my site?
No. GPTBot is the crawler OpenAI uses for model training. ChatGPT search uses OAI-SearchBot. You can block GPTBot and still allow OAI-SearchBot, so your pages stay eligible for search answers.
Is getting cited by ChatGPT the same as ranking on Google?
They overlap but aren't the same. ChatGPT search uses its own crawler and third-party providers such as Bing, so a page that does well on Google can still be missing if Bing hasn't indexed it or the crawler is blocked.
How often should I check whether ChatGPT cites us?
Every couple of weeks is enough for a small business. Ask the same questions each time and record names and sources, since a single answer can change from one run to the next.
